Great Grown-up Spelling Bee

Austin's 7th Annual Great Grown Up Spelling Bee was the best yet! Thank you to all of the Literacy Coalition's 2010 sponsors, friends, and supporters: you made the event a huge success. Congratulations to the Spelling Demons, who outspelled their formidable rivals, the Church Ladies. We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

A uniquely Austin event, the Bee supports an important cause and has earned a reputation for being uproariously fun! As the Literacy Coalition's main fundraiser, the annual Spelling Bee helps us support over 70 local literacy programs. In 2010, our community came together at the Spelling Bee to raise over $75,000 to fight illiteracy.

Each year the Spelling Bee pits local businesses and organizations against one another in a raucous competition, with over 500 audience members cheering and jeering along the way!  19 teams representing big-hearted organizations like Alamo Drafthouse, the Austin American-Statesman, Half Price Books, and Silicon Labs compete for bragging rights and the top prize.

The Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee is the most fun fundraiser in Austin, packing the room with teams of competitive grown-ups in wacky costumes, cheering supporters, and celebrity officials.  Our recent Bee Officials have included Senator Kirk Watson, KUT's Jennifer Stayton, Esther’s Follies Ray Anderson, retired DA Ronnie Earle, County Judge Sam Biscoe, and KEYE TV News Anchor Ron Oliveira.
