Computer literacy and internet skills (aka Digital Literacy) have become the new basic literacy skills necessary for survival in today’s technology-driven world. Access to the Internet creates significant economic benefits that impacts jobs, productivity, competitiveness, and overall standard of living.

Too many Central Texans are on the wrong side of the digital literacy divide. In response, the Literacy Coalition and its partner programs are introducing Learner Web—an exciting new project to improve digital literacy across Central Texas!

What is the Learner Web?

Learner Web is innovative, online software developed by Portland State University that offers self-paced lesson plans for adult learning. The hallmark of Learner Web is its ability to connect learners with both online and offline resources in their local communities, making learning more relevant to their daily lives.

Learners access Learner Web at area computer labs and are paired with trained Learner Web Computer Literacy & Internet Coaches (CLICs) as they work to build their computer literacy and internet skills. Outside of the lab, learners can access the literacy resources on their own time and in their own environment. Learner Web can be integrated with current curricula and classroom instruction or it can act as a stand-alone for those individuals not currently enrolled in formal programs.

In addition to improving digital literacy skills, Leaner Web helps Central Texans be more competitive in today’s demand occupations by building workforce skills. Learners can access lesson plans that help them identify appropriate career pathways based on their skills, abilities, and interests. They are connected with local programs and resources that facilitate moving into or moving ahead in their chosen pathway.
