Position Description
Full-Time 11-Month Literacy*AmeriCorps Member 
 

Responsibilities

  • Serve 1700 hours over 11 months, beginning September 2011
  • Provide direct teaching or tutoring to adults at a Literacy*AmeriCorps service site
  • Provide outreach, collaboration & project support at service site
  • With small group, plan and implement one community service project
  • Lead and participate in group projects, service reflection and peer training
  • Participate in all of the following: pre-service orientation, basic tutor training
  • Participate in unity events with corps including Literacy*AmeriCorps retreat & development training
  • Attend the Literacy*AmeriCorps national conference (located in Pittsburgh
  • Participate in state and county national service events and training
  • Participate in MLK Day of Service and other service days as chosen by team
  • Complete required quarterly progress reports and program evaluations

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree or qualifying experience
  • Ability to work well with a team and independently
  • Demonstrated interest in adult education and community service
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations
  • Creativity, commitment and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Interest in working on group projects and participating in group reflection
  • Community service experience
  • Literacy education experience helpful, though not required
  • Must be a high school graduate and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident


Application Process

Potential members will be encouraged to look at the site and research to choose a position that is a good fit for them.  All potential members will be asked to fill out an application (either via LCCT or the National Americorps website that will include questions about their expectations.  Each application will be asked to provide two professional references.  Friends, family members, fellow church members, etc. will not be accepted as references.  Applications completed online will be sent directly to the LCCT program director.

Interview:

The program director will use the application to judge if the applicant is a good fit for the program.  Applicants will be contacted by phone or email and invited for an interview. A face-to-face interview is preferred, but a phone interview is acceptable for out-of-state applicants if necessary.  After the interview, the program director will notify member’s of acceptance into the program, and let them know that final decisions will be contingent on his/her placement at a service sites.

Site Interviews:

Accepted applicants that choose to join the program, must be placed at a service site before member orientation begins. Guided by LCCT, the applicant will choose up to three service sites of interest.  LCCT will send the member’s application and references to the site supervisors at the indicated sites, and the site supervisors will contact the member directly for an interview.  Applicants should have their site interviews within 10-15 days of their LCCT interview.  Once the site interviews are completed, applicants and service site staff will give feedback to the LCCT director.   A placement decision will be made based on this feedback and the recommendations.  

Placement:

Once a member is placed* in a service position, they will be asked to fill out a pre-service commitment form and be given information about orientation and pre-service training. Then…it’s on to an awesome year of making a difference in the lives of hundreds of Central Texans!
