Literacy Day at the Capitol |
|
Literacy Day at the Capitol is a day-long event during the Texas Legislative Session. The event is co-hosted by the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas and the Texas Christian Life Commission.
Our 2009 event was the biggest and most successful, yet!
Over 400 people attended Literacy Day at the Capitol, with over 260 of those attendees being adult students in literacy programs. We had over 16 cities and towns represented from across the state. What a powerful message for our state legislators!
Our efforts helped encourage the state to approve an additional $30 million in state funding for Adult Education!Meetings with legislators urged them to support the Texas Education Agency Legislative Appropriation Request (LAR) for $50 million. The event included a rally on the steps of the Capitol with featured community leaders and elected officials including Mayor Narvaiz of San Marcos, Senator Florence Shapiro, Representative Rob Eissler, and Ray Glinn, Associate Commissioner of the Texas Education Agency.
Adult literacy students are invited to learn how to access state representatives and senators and keep them abreast of current literacy issues. This program not only educates legislators, but also engages learners in the civic process. A training session precedes legislative visits and a de-briefing luncheon followed. The students returned after visiting their legislators with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and empowerment.
