Literacy Day at the Capitol

capitolpic

Every two years during the Texas legislative session, LCCT partners with the Texas Christian Life Commission to host Literacy Day at the Capitol, a day long event to celebrate and support literacy programs.

Students, teachers, and supporters meet their state representatives and highlight the impact that literacy programs have on the Texas economy, families, and our quality of life.

Literacy Day 2011 was a great success!

During the 2011 legislative session, the budget shortfall meant many programs would face severe cuts--but hundreds of people participated in Literacy Day to remind lawmakers how important it is to educate our workforce.

Learn about the impact Literacy Day had in 2009.

Literacy programs made great strides in Texas since the 2009 session!

Increased awareness of adult education last session brought unprecedented collaboration and communication between the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the Texas Workforce Commission to developm an efficient career pathways system for Texas.

Yet despite having a drastic need for adult education programs, Texas still ranks near the bottom in state funding for adult education. The 2009 investment in adult education has led to more Texans receiving services--but the need for literacy programs continues to grow.

Adult literacy programs are a vital part of a strong economy.  They create taxpayers and reduce reliance on public benefits.  And they're more than just good for the Texas economy--literacy programs change lives!

Literacy students, teachers, and advocates asked their representatives to support clear, coordinated pathways from low literacy to meaningful careers.

There are many ways we can make Texas a better place to learn, work, and live:

  • Champion creative "bridge programs" that bridge the gap between high school/GED programs and college readiness.
  • Increase the availability of GED testing centers
  • Align the adult education programs, higher education, and credit systems in Texas
  • Support career pathways that connect workers with the education and skills they need to compete.

Get involved with the LCCT network to help support literacy in our community!
