Low Literacy - Basic Literacy Needs



Of the 164,452 adults needing a GED, 121,074 of them do not have the minimum literacy skills necessary to enroll in a GED program.


121,074 adults age 16 years and older in Central Texas struggle with reading or cannot read at all.

Those who score at or below the “Below Basic” level on the NAAL survey range from having extremely limited literacy skills to only being able to locate simple and commonplace text and information. 



Those reading at the "Below Basic" level might encounter the following:

  • Able to recognize their name on a prescription bottle but not able to read or understand the medication directions.
  • Able to contextually understand a stop sign but not able to read or navigate a bus route.
  • Not able to help their children learn to read or help them with their homework.
  • Not able to fill out driver's license, social security card, or job applications.
