How do literacy volunteers help?

Our local literacy programs struggle to meet the demand for classes, as only 1 in 20 people seeking literacy services have access to them. Literacy volunteers are crucial to filling the gap: they assist teachers in English classes so students receive more individual attention, coordinate and decorate for the fundraisers that sustain literacy programs, and ensure there's someone there to read to children for storytime at the library.

Volunteers make a difference whether they enjoy helping out in an office, writing and editing, or practicing conversation with non-native English speakers. Their contributions change lives when they staff a food pantry, teach EL-civics, or serve on the board of a literacy program. No matter what you'd like to do, the Literacy Coalition can help you share your skills so that others can learn!

What do volunteer teachers and teacher aides do?

We welcome volunteer teachers in these general areas:
  • Children’s Literacy: Reading to children, leading classes and playgroups in child development centers, helping with homework, and mentoring
  • GED Preparation: Helping to prepare students to pass their GED exam, usually by tutoring in a 1-on-1 setting or small group
  • Adult Basic Education: Teaching adult learners who are below the 6th grade level in basic math, reading, writing, or other subjects
  • English as a Second Language: Helping immigrants, refugees, or other non-native English speakers learn to speak English
  • Informal/Conversation Club ESL: Practicing conversation with learners who already know much English, to build confidence and listening skills
  • Workplace Literacy: Helping people learn English specific to their job, as a teacher or teacher's aide
  • Life Skills Literacy: This is a general category for Financial Literacy (literacy for budgeting and managing money) and Health Literacy (literacy for patient-doctor communication, disease management and prevention); teachers typically do outreach events or workshops around the community
