"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.
It is a tool for daily life in modern society.
It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block
of development..." -Kofi Annan

In the late 1990’s and early 2000, a series of community forums and facilitated discussions centered on literacy needs in the community. Several themes emerged, including the need for a centralized point of coordination for the community’s literacy services, as well as the need for increased public awareness and resources for programs. In response to these needs, the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas was founded in 2001 by a small group of literacy service providers and concerned community leaders. The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas became professionalized with its first paid staff member in 2003. The LCCT supports basic family literacy, workforce literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), financial literacy, health literacy and more. By working with its member providers, it has been able to reach out to new groups not currently being served, expand into new markets and increase the awareness of literacy needs in central Texas. We play a central role in coordinating and supporting high-quality literacy services throughout Central Texas (the five counties including Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson) including services for speakers of other languages, adult basic education, family literacy, workplace literacy, and health literacy. We are dedicated to supporting and expanding literacy services so that businesses can hire, people can work, and families can thrive.
