The Literacy Coalition of Central Texas mobilizes providers, learners,
employers, educators, policy makers and other stakeholders to create a
central Texas community that is 100% literate, employable, and engaged.

Our Mission:

Dedicated to supporting and expanding high-quality literacy services so that businesses can hire, people can work, and families can thrive.

Our History:

In the late 1990’s and early 2000, a series of community forums discussed literacy needs in the community.  Several themes emerged, including the need for a centralized point of coordination for the community’s literacy services as well as the need for increased public awareness and resources for programs.  In response to these needs, the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas was founded in 2001 by a small group of literacy service providers and concerned community leaders.  By working with its member providers, it has been able to reach out to new groups not currently being served, expand into new markets and increase the awareness of literacy needs in central Texas.

Our Goals:

1. Increase capacity and enhance quality of literacy services at partner agencies through identification of new resources (volunteer teachers, financial resources, and other in-kind support).

2. Promote more effective and efficient use of existing community resources by mobilizing partnerships and improving service coordination.

3. Increase regional awareness of literacy issues to improve policy direction and fiscal investment of public and private sectors for literacy services.

4. Coordinate local research and regional planning efforts for literacy conditions, needs and service provision.
