Why volunteer?

"Working with adults in this very personal way has enlightened me in a way that no other activity ever has. My understanding of people has widened, my levels of tolerance and patience has increased, and my respect for human dignity has expanded. Personally, I feel as if I have gotten as much if not more than my students from this experience and it has had a lasting impact on my life and my perspective. I would recommend it without reservation to anyone who has the time and the patience. I feel that I have this wonderful opportunity to empower another person with some skills that could have a major impact on their lives and the lives of others in their family." - A Literacy Coalition volunteer

Despite incredible efforts in service provision and resource development, Literacy provider organizations are struggling to meet the vast and increasing need for literacy services in the Central Texas region. As the demand for services continues to outpace available resources of the provider organizations, organizations need to increase their resources in order to provide more services. An estimated one out of ten adults needing literacy services has access to them in the central Texas area.

Community volunteers teach a large portion of the available literacy classes.  Partner organizations of the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas (LCCT) have expressed a need for more well-trained volunteers to provide more high-quality literacy services.
