What a literacy coalition does

  • 1. Raises literacy awareness to make it a priority issue in the region.

  • 2. Develops a regional literacy plan with endorsements from business, government and community leadership.

  • 3. Operates a community hotline to link learners with programs, help volunteers identify opportunities, and disseminate information to other programs and to the public.

  • 4. Maintains a directory of community literacy services containing such details as program types, goals, target ages, contacts, and times of operation.

  • 5. Offers assistance, training, best practice models and support to literacy providers.

  • 6. Produces annual research document that tracks and reports literacy statistics.

  • 7. Creates opportunities to maximize resources in the community that fund and support literacy services.

  • 8. Coordinates an annual literacy leadership conference and facilitates ongoing literacy dialogue in the community.

  • 9. Coordinates task forces to address specific local literacy needs including
